Are Wooden Toys BIS Certified? What Indian Parents Should Know

โ€ขBy Kastha Toys

Understanding Toy Safety in India

As parents, we spend countless hours researching the safest car seats, the healthiest organic baby food, and the gentlest skincare products. But what about the toys our children put in their mouths every single day?

In recent years, the Indian government has taken strict measures to regulate the toy industry, primarily to stop the influx of cheap, toxic, and dangerous toys imported from unregulated markets. The most significant of these measures is the mandatory BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Certification for all toys sold in India.

What is BIS Certification?

The BIS mark (often referred to as the ISI mark) is a guarantee that a product meets the rigorous safety standards set by the Indian government. For toys, the standard is IS 9873.

To obtain this certification, toys must undergo brutal testing in certified laboratories. They are tested for:

  1. Mechanical and Physical Properties: Will the toy break into sharp shards? Are there small parts that pose a choking hazard for children under 3?
  2. Flammability: Does the material catch fire easily?
  3. Migration of Certain Elements: This is the most crucial test. The toy is submerged in an acid solution that mimics a child's stomach acid. The lab tests if any toxic heavy metals (like Lead, Arsenic, Mercury, or Cadmium) leach out of the paints or materials.

Do Wooden Toys Need BIS Certification?

Yes. Absolutely.

There is a common misconception that because wood is "natural," all wooden toys are automatically safe. This is dangerously false.

While the wood itself might be natural, the danger lies in how the toy is manufactured:

  • Paints and Finishes: Uncertified wooden toys are often coated in cheap, industrial paints laden with Lead and heavy metals. When your baby chews on these toys, they ingest these toxins.
  • Splinters: Poorly sanded wood can cause painful splinters.
  • Glue: Cheap toys use toxic adhesives containing formaldehyde to glue parts together.
